EnvironmentAHS are continuously striving to improve our environmental status. When choosing product design, waste management, packaging and service systems we always consider environmental impact as well as the economic and functional aspects. Recyclable materials are sort where ever possible, without compromising safety and product quality. Waste to EnergyAll energy generated by the incineration of our waste is recovered by the plant and the steam is used to heat our local hospital. Any surplus energy goes straight back into the National Grid. Did you know that 80% of waste is land filled in today’s society? With our environment issues of today this is clearly not acceptable, and this is why our method of disposal is to incinerate. ‘Bag It Bin It’*It is estimated that 2 billion items of sanitary protection are flushed down British toilets every year. Children, bathers and other beach users regularly come across these items, and to a child, the potential dangers of a syringe needle or used sanitary towel is not always obvious. In the Beachwatch 2000 survey an estimated 12,000 separate items of SRD were identified and in an average kilometre of beach over 110 items were located. Marine wildlife can also suffer. Seabirds often gather tampon applicators mistaking them for nesting materials. Our sewerage systems simply were not designed to handle personal products, most of which contain plastic or other insoluble materials. When flushed they can create blockages. In fact it has been estimated that over two thirds of blockages contain disposable items, which reduces the efficiency of the system and add to the problem of sewage flowing into our rivers and seas. *We at AHS are committed to your welfare and our environment offering solutions to support the ‘Bag it Bin It Campaign’ a national water industry-led campaign promoting responsible disposal of discarded personal products. |
